Michelle Malament, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Michelle Malament has spent most of her life working with a variety of domestic and wild animal species. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, her love of animals and desire to help them has taken her all around the United States, Africa, and Australia. Her undergraduate studies started at the University of California in Santa Barbara and ended at Miami University in Ohio when she earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology. While earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Purdue University, Dr. Malament continued to follow her love of wildlife medicine spending a great deal of her clinical year at wildlife hospitals around the world.
Though there is no feeling quite like helping an injured animal return to the wild, Dr. Malament missed the doctor, patient, family relationship that can be found with domestic animal medicine. Following her graduation from Purdue University, Dr. Malament went on to pursue further studies in small animal emergency medicine, internal medicine, and surgery and completed a Small Animal Internship at Animal Medical Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. She then moved to Connecticut with Belle, her three-legged best friend, to continue her career in small animal practice. Her Connecticut family has since grown to include two German Shepherds, Klaus and Ryker.
For Dr. Malament, getting to know her patients and their families is one of her favorite aspects of being a veterinarian, and she quickly becomes attached. The strength and complexity of the human-animal bond is one that continues to amaze her. Although she loves happy, healthy visits, it is also rewarding for her to provide knowledge and support during the more difficult times. Giving a voice to her animal patients helps pets and their families stay together for as long as possible.
Dr. Malament will always be grateful to the mastiff who let her stick her head in his mouth when she was three years old, simply to see what was inside. That moment she knew she wanted to be a veterinarian, and loves that it is her everyday reality.
